Every once in a while, millennials require some sort of relatability to associate themselves with, to feel like they’re like one another, and put a finger on their feelings that are indescribable. Today’s Internet Sensation is the compilation of the “Little Miss” and “Mr. Men” memes on Instagram, which are guiding people to feel relatable and even create their own set of images, to share with their followers.
Instagram users are associating themselves with this character from long ago — using “Mr. Men” and “Little Miss” to call out their own insecurities, pain points, and personality traits.
What is it about ‘colour’ that fascinates people and relieves their inner anxieties? Memes like these — all colourful, sublime in their own animated way, and humorous — can make people feel a sense of safety and inclusivity, because of the formation of communities and people joining hands in the comments sections to call out their own instincts and different variations of the ‘feelings’ they feel.
The Origin of These Characters
All of this stemmed from the children’s books that were pretty famous back when Roger Hargreaves started the Mr. Men book series in 1971, with “Mr. Tickle” being the initial character. And the series expanded with the birth of “Little Miss” in 1981 as we were introduced to illustrations including “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Little Miss Naughty”, and “Little Miss Bossy”.
And NOW, it’s time for a revival of these characters (because you never know when something can get popular on social media these days). The instagram account @littlemissnotesapp (with 2.4M followers currently) has now fully dedicated itself to the virality of these posts, which everybody is now sharing on their social media accounts, talking about how they completely relate with the characters. The person actually behind this account is @nicole.g, who is from Brazil and currently has 19k followers on her own account.
Originally, this game started when @juulpuppy posted the first meme on her Instagram account, originating the trend, in April, 2022.
According to NBC, “The “Mr. Men” book series was inspired by Hargreaves’ eldest son, Adam, who at age 8 had asked his father what a tickle looked like, according to the book’s website.
Hargreaves was initially amused by the question but was inspired to write a children’s book about a character named Mr. Tickle, which went on to sell a million copies in three years, the website said.”
So, What is Going on Currently?
Well, the Internet is going bananas, creating everything from “Little Miss Practically Drinks Ranch” to “Little Miss Takes Pictures of Herself Crying”. Yes, there’s strangely one or more for everyone to say “oh, that’s me” to.
It’s not just the millennials. Brands like Nando’s and LinkedIn have also joined in on the trend, with their Tweets going viral. Nando’s Tweet stands at more than 3,507 Retweets, which explains how much people are getting excited over the current internet sensation. LinkedIn’s Tweet has about a whopping 12.3k Retweets too.
How This Trend is Empowering People
People can find comfort in such trends, to reveal some of their private and innate characteristics which are otherwise too sensitive to be talked about openly. This trend has proved to be a great way for people to come out about their personal issues.
@juulpuppy had also posted the meme trend on Instagram, saying “Little Miss Borderline Personality Disorder”, along with the other ‘self-personifications’ in the same carousel.
On the same carousel, an Instagram user also said “Lol oops. BPD 😂 I need a slideshow of all my disorders”, while others commented things like “Nah I’m screaming 😂😂😂😂 the ibs one that’s me” and “Where are my ibs baddies at 💅”. People are finding relevance in the simplest of things, and building communities.
See how this trend is giving strength to people too? Isn’t it so brave? The internet has so much power, especially social media.
